WE BELIEVE
IN PEOPLE

I've been offered a position of responsibility

The shadow line, the fog that I see in front of me,
For the first time in my life
I know what I leave and I don’t know what I’ll find
I've been offered a position of responsibility
To take this ship across a course that no one knows
In a condition of precarious stability
For the first time in my life I am caught up in commotion
I feel new emotions
In my bag I carry teared clothes soaked with seawater
For each tear a harbor, for each harbor a song
Sailing is sweet when others choose the course
No concerns of yours
Just to do what you've been asked to

I've been offered a position of responsibility
They told me that there is a ship which needs a new Captain
They told me that the wage is good
They told me that she carries a secret and important load
The responsibility is broad
I am ready to take the jump
I am ready to leave those carefree youthful days of a past that is past
Yet, a fog of tears
Hides the answer to my fears
What will I be? Where my nature will take me to?
My father’s face appears on a mirror of gold
He is young and I am old
His words resound in my ears
“Life is not easy, you need to commit to your life with no fears.”
The day will come when I take it upon myself
And now this day of monsoon
Whose winds blow in all directions
Looking through a lens, the world looks like a chessboard
Where each move can totally change the game

I’ve been offered a position of responsibility
I don’t know whether bravery is to take it or to get away from it all
Whether I should run away or face a reality that is difficult to be understood
Yet so good to be explored
I try to imagine what it would be like after crossing the sea
When I’ve brought this load to its destination
In a place where I’ll be safe until next monsoon

I’ve been offered a position of responsibility
Tomorrow I’ll go down to the harbor
I’ll tell them I’m ready to leave
And I’ll wait for instructions
When the monsoon is over I’ll say: “Ropes away, full steam ahead
This is our course, this is our direction, this is my decision.”

Lorenzo Cherubini - Jovanotti
paraphrases Joseph Conrad, The Shadow Line

She stood looking at us without a stir, with an air of brooding over an inscrutable purpose. A whole minute passed, and then she made a step forward. There was a low jingle, a glint of yellow metal, a sway of fringed draperies, and she stopped. She looked at us all as if her life had depended upon the unswerving steadiness of her glance.
Joseph Conrad, Cuore di Tenebra

With a degree in Economics, I was hired at CdM as a receptionist. I didn’t know anything about yachts and shipyards at that time but this world cast a spell on me. I started giving a hand to Vasco, Sales & Marketing Director, in the commercial back office, with marketing issues and attendance to Yacht Shows. Then I took on a post in the Purchasing Department as a replacement for a colleague on maternity leave... than back to Marketing and Events. I remember my emotion on the day of my interview just like it happened yesterday. I believed in CdM since my first day and they trusted me and gave me the possibility to grow within (and with) the company. I’ve been working at CdM for 8 years now.
